alb5148036 Anton Koberger, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, Hartmann Schedel, Michael Wolgemut, Schedel's World Chronicle, paper, woodcut, Total: Height: 44,00 cm; Width: 32,00 cm; Depth: 8,50 cm, printed matter, town, city view (veduta), city maps, Renaissance, A highlight in book illustration on the threshold between the Middle Ages and modern times is the so-called Schedel's World Chronicle. The Nuremberg city physician and humanist Hartmann Schedel published a Latin and a German edition of his chronicle in 1493. The voluminous book is equipped with numerous woodcuts: On more than 600 pages, there are over 1,800 illustrations, which were created by Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The chronicle is an atlas, lexicon and history book in one. On display are maps, portraits and family trees, coats of arms, wonders and legendary figures. The book illustrates the course of time with pictures of famous people and places. Some cities are shown for the first time in reproduction graphics. However, only some of these famous city views are authentic, others are highly typified, some woodcuts are even used for different cities. Schedel's World Chronicle can be understood as an ambitious attempt to capture the course of the world between two book covers. Following a traditional scheme, the chronicle is divided into seven world ages and unfolds the sequence of times from the biblical story of creation to the Last Judgement. However, it is not only based on the Bible, but also on insights from antiquity and views of the emerging humanism. The World Chronicle thus shows a picture of the world and of history in a state of upheaval, which still oscillates between faith, superstition and knowledge.

In the 12th-century Speculum Virginum she symbolized the triumph of humility over pride; in other handbooks she prefigured the Virgin Mary. Yet in the late 15th century, Judith became a femme fatale.

alb9441841 The Nuremberg Chronicle, first Latin edition, 1493, Michael Wolgemut; Artist: Wilhelm Pleydenwurff; Author: Hartmann Schedel; Printer: Anton Koberger, German, 1434/37 - 1519, 17 5/8 x 12 3/8 x 3 1/4in. (44.8 x 31.4 x 8.3cm), Woodcuts and letterpress; bound volume, Germany, 15th century, At the end of the 15th century, the new industry of book printing reached its zenith in Nuremberg, Germany. This book, which was written by Dr. Hartmann Schedel, recounts the history of the world from Creation to the early 1490s with lessons in religion and geography intermingled with unusual and interesting facts and phenomena. The expensive enterprise was funded by Sebald Schreyer and S. Kammermeister, who hired Anton Koberg's firm to print it. Koberg operated twenty-four presses and printed 1,500 copies of the book in Latin and an additional 1,000 copies in German. The copy on display is from the first Latin edition. This edition was more carefully laid out and printed because it appealed to a more learned audience. The Chronicle contains 1809 prints taken from 645 actual woodcuts, resulting in 1164 repetitions. The woodcuts were created in the workshop of Michael Wohlgemut, who was assisted by his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. In addition to his work on the Chronicle, Wohlgemut is famous as the instructor of Albrecht Dürer, who some scholars believe contributed several images to this book.

Published in: Nuremberg. Publisher: Anton Koberger (German, Nuremberg ca. 1445-1513 Nuremberg). Date: July 12, 1493.The Liber Chronicarum, more commonly known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, was the most profusely illustrated book of the 15th century. Two Nuremberg artists, Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, collaborated on the publication with author Hartmann Schedel. The most influential images in the book were the 53 views of cities and countries in Europe and around the Mediterranean. Drawings of the actual sites were used whenever possible, but in many instances the artists invented views that were reused to represent various different cities. The author undoubtedly knew the French city of Strasbourg (Argentina, in Latin). The splendid depiction here barely fits on the double-page spread; the block of text above has had to make way for the cathedral's protruding steeple.
